I collect coins that I have all intentions they will go to my sons. But, I collect what I like and they hopefully will like what I collected for them. I do this thinking they will improve on the sets they were given or expand the collection into a generational family collection. All the time I realize they very well may sell the collection. That is okay too since I'll be gone and it won't matter to me. The only rule is if my wife is around when I'm not, is to not turn the collection over to them until they are old enough (mature enough) to realize what they have and make a good decision. After the state quarters were started we moved on to the American Silver Eagles which I am happy with the decision.

I am attempting to have for them some type of every circulating coin by denomination ( cent, nickel, dime, etc.). I also want to cover three centuries of American Coinage (19th, 20th, and 21st) with every decade of the 3 centuries represented even if it includes some type of small type set(s). At the same time I also will probably collect commemerative silver dollars that I like. I'm only four decades short now, but will close that gap in time.

The point is it is my collection right now so I collect what I like and want that I can afford. I think if they will be interested in coins they will like and appreciate what I have assembled for them. Someone asked me at work recently how many coins have I collected. I never thought of it as individual coins, only sets. I thought about it for a few minutes trying to count it up in my head, and to my surprise it is several hundred coins, and didn't have to spend a fortune to do it.
