Here is an Off Center OCLMC.jpg
Back to Worn Coins next 1874GB.jpg

There is just enough details to tell this is a GB Large Penny and the date can barely be seen. Does that make this a low ball or is that just a US coin thing?

This is an ancient coin depicting Augustus & Agrippa on the obverse. The reverse depicts a crocodile chained to a palm tree. The crocodile symbolizes Egypt.

Call it what you like. It could be a lowball. Me, personally, I call those "Slick Vickies", and even had a "Slick Vickie Contest" on Collectors Universe, once. The cool thing about the halfpennies and pennies of that era is that the exergue where the date is got protected from wear so it's one of the last features to go. A coin can be FR02 or even PO01 and still have a readable date!

You should use that one to start a "Slick Vickie" thread over here. ;)

The little lozenge/diamond/square pattern on that elephant's side is fascinating. I've never seen that before. Do you suppose it portrays some kind of padded or armored suit they would have put on a war elephant?

That nice "lady" is rather androgynous, and looks more like a young classical Greek male athlete to me than a lady, but I suppose it could also be a rather flat-chested, mannish-looking lass.

Hard to say, since you can't see his or her ... *ahem* ... equipment. (Thankfully.)

    So... where were we?

    Ah, yes. Crustaceans.

Sicily, Akragas: silver hemidrachm, ca. 410-406 BC

Obverse- eagle right, clutching dead hare in its talons, barley grain behind.
Reverse- Crab, with ketos below, swimming left with fish in its jaws.

    16 mm, 1.8 g. SNG ANS 1012.

New theme, based on the ketos (sea monster) seen on this same coin:

Let's have mythical monsters next. Extra credit for sea monsters.

I'm not going for the extra credit because I want to share this weird mythical beast.

The chimera on the obverse is basically a lion with an extra goat's head and a snake tail.

The next theme is coins with a flying bird (dove for extra credit :)).

@Collect89 - that Sikyon stater is awesome.

I remember @AncientJoe posting his incredible example with its "glowing" chimera over on Collectors Universe. If he posts an ancient, you automatically know it will be an absolute stunner, but yours is the nicest example I've seen since.

No doves here, I'm afraid. How 'bout some geese?

So that's flying birds ... by the dozen!

(Got this one from @Stork, speaking of birds.)
