    This is 1940 Japan. The bird is the 'Golden Kite' which is a symbol for militarism/military victory. The metal is aluminum, because by then the acitve debasement of Japanese coinage was in full swing.

    By 1944/1945 things had progressed to the point where patterns for clay coins were commissioned. Never fully released for use, though some did circulate apparently, thus still considered patterns.

    In the immediate post-war time frame the martial kite/hawk has now been replaced with a peaceful dove. The issuing authority inscription across the top reads as "Government of Japan" as this was before the new (and current) constitution and government were put into place.

    This issue from the Denver mint was introduced after the landing of MacArthur at Leyte. Many were saved by American soldiers serving there. All were demonetized by the Philippine government in the late 1960's. foriegn1944philipines us administeration 20centavos 007-horz.jpg Continue same theme...
