Like many of my old Portuguese India AE coins, this one is well worn. It has been labeled as "17x8" for a long time, however today I look at it again and begin to think it might be 1718. The design resembles some coins of João V, 1706-1750. Weight 9.12 grams and diameter of 23mm should make it an atiya. Any opinions as to what the date is? 17x8 PT-IN atiya obv.JPG 17x8 PT-IN atiya rev.JPG

This may not have a lot of wear despite the look. I think it could be called "rough". These were very crude.

Funny, I tried to compare to examples on Zeno and found what almost appears as a die match (#243124) and they also list the date as 17x8.

    Stephen Penny S1278:

This was struck during the period of English history known as "The Anarchy" when King Stephen and Empress Matilda were vying for the throne after Henry I died. Brutal times and I suspect the coin was very little better even when first struck.

I'll tell you a secret (Ssssh...!). There is a thread like this on the Ancients Forum, that has been going on for three years. The rules are a bit different, as stated by @Collect89 in July, 2017:

If you can post an item depicting the current theme, then you get to post a second item of your own to start a new theme. Post your coin & state the theme that goes along with your coin. The theme might be coins with owls, coins with COS II, or coins with severed heads. Anything goes (coin, token, medal, artifact, etc) but we should keep it to something ancient. The next poster then posts something containing that theme & then posts/declares some new theme.

You see mainly Roman and Greek coins there, no medievals, like this worn but interesting coin:

AE fals Tahirids. Talha b. Tahir (822-828), mint Bust in Southern Afghanistan. Obv. Rough Sasanian head t.r. in a circle, surrounded by unreadable text. Rev. Arabic text (kalima). 18 mm, 2.00 gr. Album 1394. RR.

This is the last example of a Sasanian coin type in Islamic coinage. Zeno 148375.
