    No more monkeys?

OK, well, the 24-hour-stall rule comes into effect, then. Time to hit the reset button.

    How about ... swords?

It's as good an excuse as any to post one of my newps.

France (Duchy of Lorraine): silver "sword" type demi-gros of Antoine the Good, ca. 1508-1544

Antoine, Duke of Lorraine, known as "Antoine the Good", was a contemporary of Henry VIII of England, and like that famous and infamous king, he was painted by Hans Holbein the Younger. This is his Holbein portrait from 1543.

Post your coins with swords on them!

Extra credit for ladies with swords. It's a theme I like, for some inexplicable reason.

1644 VOC 1/2 stuiver. I have posted this on another thread. From Wikipedia:

“In 1644 the VOC instructed a Chinese resident of Batavia named Conjok to mint copper coinage in denominations of a half and quarter stuiver to address the shortage of low denomination money. The VOC administrators in the Netherlands ordered this minting to cease after only five weeks, so not many coins were minted.”

*Note that these coins were cast, not minted.

It is probably the rarest coin I own. I just hope it is real, ya know?

Authenticating cast coinage must be a real beast in terms of difficulty. Would be for me, anyway.

Another Dutch sword wielding feline, on a 2.5 cent coin or half stuiver from 1915. The planchets were pre-blackened at the time, apparently to prevent them from being mixed in with gold 10 guilder coins. In my opinion the obverse is still one of the nicest designs on Dutch coinage. 2.5C152.jpg 2.5C15.jpg

That one is probably a full thaler, while mine is a smaller denomination (quarter-thaler). The thalers had dates while the quarter-thalers like mine did not. I'm not sure why that is. The quarter-thalers were still big coins, so it's not like it was a lack of space.

Apparently there are quarter-thalers that have dates (1612 and 1614). Maybe the engravers just felt lazy that year.

Just one of those idiosyncrasies, I suppose. Seems like putting dates on coin dies didn't fully catch on until the latter portion of the 17th century, and even into the 18th century some authorities were still issuing undated coins.
