Lordmarcovan, what, pray tell, is that coin? I do not recognize the language.

I have posted this one before, just such a wild looking lion I had to do it again. 2009 CZ 50 k obv.JPG 2009 CZ 50 k rev.JPG

It's in my "Eclectic Box". See link in signature line. :)

Long story short, it's a Seljuk (or Seljuq) dirham from the 13th century (AH 638/1240-1241 AD). From a region that is now part of modern Turkey. The lion on it is a rare animal representation for an Islamic coin.

It's interesting how seamlessly the center ring of that bimetallic Czech coin "blends" on one side. On the reverse (city) side, you can barely see the seam between the center and outer ring at all, and even the colors seem to have blended in places, whereas the seam is much more apparent on the obverse (lion) side.

A new (very old) lion for me:

I'm not really an ancient collector just yet (the slippery slope may have been stepped upon however).

The inspiration is my Zog's Albania set. The coins were designed by the Italian mint engravers, and they in turn were heavily influenced by their classic-loving King who had a numismatic streak a mile wide (and, in fact, wrote quite a reference in his day).

@Stork- What a breathtaking addition! Perfect tie-in, to show the ancient inspiration for your Albanian coin's design. Zog's infatuation with Classical art no doubt had much to do with the beauty of his coins!

That interesting helmet design on Athena on your coin appears to be the same as on my Taras, Calabria drachm. According to the description on my coin which FORVM provided, it represents Skylla hurling a stone. She is depicted in various sea-monstery guises in mythology, and appears to have a crab claw on your coin!

(Below is a comparison with @Stork's coin- disregard for game purposes and continue with "Lions" theme.)

The plain field around portrait seems a bit odd to me.

I like it. I believe that is what is referred to as "anepigraphic" by ancient coin peeps. (i.e., without a legend.)

Much like the United States 1837-38 "no stars" Seated Liberty dimes and half-dimes. Those did have the date on the obverse, but nothing else surrounding Lady Liberty. It was a nice, uncluttered look by comparison with the later "stars obverse" types.
