    Very nice!!!this one has some character especially the group of cuds/pre-cuds on the reverse.

    At first I thought there may have been a bit of flashing on the edge of the planchet, which then got run through the upsetting mill and pushed up to the edge of the coin.

    After looking more closely I think these are, as you said, places where the edge of the die got chipped and left tiny cuds along the rim. If the die came down and hit something in the 7:00 area, that conceivably could have caused these tiny chips, as well as the die crack that runs horizontally through the ribbon at the right of the photo.

    It’s fun to speculate on what might have happened.

    They to me look like folded over finned rims.
    I could easily be wrong though.

    If they are really cuds / die chips, they should show up on other coins. If they are folded over fins, then this is unique. I need a minion I can send off to scour the web for other photos to see if there are any more of these.
