As I was looking at this coin in the pawn shop, the D fell off the coin. The owner gave me the coin, tried to find the MM but it had either gone under the display case, or buried itself in the rug.
@Pickin and Grinin- Really??? That's a great story!! Before I read what you wrote, I scrolled down to see the coin and said; what the heck is this??
That's to funny... Lost the Mint Mark! Did the owner know what he had or that it was a glued on MM before it fell off?
This was a few years ago. The kid bought the shop from his uncle. He didn't know anything about coins. I wanted the MM to see how it was attached, judging by the size of the shiny area. I would imagine someone tried to solder it.
Very interesting!! You mention kid and shop. Sorry to get off topic here for a second but I gotta tell you guys this story. My wife and I were in Vegas several years ago. We were walking around, off the main strip, at a strip mall, window shopping at all the junk. She went into one of the shops to look around. I notice a coin shop a few doors down. I told her I was going to the coin shop and I'll meet up with her later. The owner (I think it was the owner) greeted me. I was always in the market for a St Gaudens Double Eagle. The most beautiful coin IMO. I still don't have one. I just wanted to see one up close. The guy brought out three and put them on the counter. We were talking about them. Just then, he got a phone call and had to leave. He asked a kid (a coworker, I say kid; he was probably in his 30's) to help me. The owner left. This kid came over to help me. He asked; how much I wanted for them?? I looked at him, I looked around (there was no one there) and yes, it crossed my mind for a split second. Do I say; no thank you and take the coins or take the money?? I paused for more then several seconds! I looked at this kid over the top of my grasses and said; these coins aren't mine, they're yours! He almost past out!! He knew I just saved him several thousand dollars!! And that's the way it was traveling west!!
