    Funny enough this fits both the last two themes (Thasos is an island off the Thracian coast in the Aegean):

    Diana is a forest-related deity:

    (This is also why I was interested in that Eravisci issue that redspork snagged... see a few entries earlier.)

    According to Crawford, this coin was minted in response to Pompey's demands for more funds with which to prosecute the war against Sertorius in Spain (which was over by 72 BC, largely due to these funds). It is interesting to note that Sertorius claimed a special relationship with Diana, with whom he "communicated" by means of his famous fawn.

    That is a cool coin in so many ways, @Bing! I love the Hercules, the unusual incuse tablet, and of course the rat. (I think following with another rat will be a challenge!)

    Born in the year 316, Constantine II was a Rat... according to the Chinese Zodiac, anyway :D. Sorry if anyone was going to post another rat coin without duplicating Bing's.
