    Egypt Playing a sistrum:

    [IMG]
    Hadrian, AD 117-138.
    Roman fourée denarius, 2.98 g, 17.7 mm, 7 h.
    Rome mint copy, ca. AD 138.
    Obv: HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P, laureate head, right.
    Rev: AEGYPTOS, Egypt reclining left, holding sistrum and leaning on basket, around which a snake coils. Ibis on left, facing right.
    Refs: RIC 296, BMCRE 801-804, RCV 3456, Strack 294.
    Notes: Underweight. The metal surface has bubbled away from the core and cracked in front of the portrait on the obverse and above the sistrum and in the exergue on the reverse, revealing it to be a fourée.

    Next: fourée

    it’s the mythical creature, the previous request is either this or playing an instrument. Even the Garuda is shown blowing a conch, which counts as an instrument!

    You weren't skipped; you apparently responded to your own call for "a half-human/half-animal representation" after two other people (Ryro and HappyCollector) had already played. The theme at that point was "Mythical creature or human playing musical instrument." Doug even called you out, saying your coin didn't meet that criteria, so I played the theme that was in play.

    Now it's "a coin from the Tamil region" because your most recent post was a valid response.

    I think we are getting back on track - but the "break" as I see it was not recognizing that Garuda met criteria for mythical creature:

    • RC - Lion
    • JayAg47 - lion -> half-human
    • Ryro - centaur -> mythical
    • happy_collector -> centaur -> mythical or instrument
    • JayAg47 - Garuda (mythical i.e. half-human/half-eagle) -> Tamil
    • RC - sistrum (instrument)...fouree
    • Bing: fouree -> capricorn
    • Ambr0sie: capricorn -> she-wolf
    • JayAg47 - she-wolf -> Tamil
    That said - I have no Tamil to offer - so, let the game continue.

    Doug and I interpreted "Mythical creature or human playing musical instrument" as meaning "mythical creature playing a musical instrument or human playing a musical instrument."

    Carry on.

    I think the ambiguity would have been avoided by placing a comma after "human." The other meaning would have been conveyed by placing a comma after "creature." However, I believe that the ambiguity is only technical: in context, the only reasonable interpretation is yours and Doug's.

    Sorry for the mixup. I was thinking "mythical creature carrying musical instrument" theme is cool but too narrow (don't want the game to pause), so I broaden it to include "humans carrying musical instrument".

    Next time I'll be more specific. Just one theme. No more and/or.

    I learned something today. Garuda is associated with a conch shell. I'm less sure that I see one on that coin so I'll need to look for a more clear specimen. I do see a shadow of something that could be a conch so that would make the post perfectly legal. Sorry for doubting it.
