I love this type -- it'll be my RR denarius # 39, if things work out! It's one of only two Republican coins showing trigas.

I guess this counts as an old provenance:

Galerius, AE Follis, 305-306 AD, Cyzicus Mint (4th Officina). Obv. Laureate head right, IMP C GAL VAL MAXIMIANVS P F AVG/ Rev. Genius, wearing modius on head, nude, chlamys draped over left shoulder, standing left, holding cornucopiae in left hand and pouring libation from patera in right hand, GENIO POPV-LI ROMANI; mintmark K Δ [K = Cyzicus, Delta = 4th Officina] in exergue. RIC VI Cyzicus 21b & 25a (pp. 582, 584), Sear RCV IV 14546, Cohen 81. 27.8 mm., 9.65 g. 12 h. Ex. Giovanni Dattari Collection (before 1923); Ex. Jesus Vico 2018.

There are a couple of varieties of each type - Cr. 299/1a and Cr/ 299/1b have different exergue legends. Cr. 382/1a has a control character before the bust of Venus - I don't seem to have one of those.

I have a better Cr. 382/1b, which needs a better photo' - I got the other as this one's only provenance is that I got it from a guy on eBay in 2006.

Perhaps due to the continual warfare of the times, much of the ancient world was struck with the plague, probably bubonic, in the early 250's. It may have begun among the Germanic invaders or in the slums of Alexandria where, according to Gibbon's estimate, half the population succumbed. The illness reached pandemic proportions among the troops (killing among others the emperor Hostilian), and returned home with the soldiers. At one point five thousand people per day died in Rome. Agriculture was particularly affected by the continual warfare and illness.

I pulled out a tray of coins last night and took some photos - I don't have any record or recollection of when or where I got some of these, including this.

it's a Probus RIC V, 158 - it seems to have the dreaded bronze disease too.
