While this coin is in now way ancient, I gotta post it here! The style just screams ancient. It is a coin from Rajas of Sivaganga, a South Indian pre-independennt state, features The god Siva as in the form of Lingam on obverse, on the reverse there is Saraswati (goddess of wisdom) seated on swan!

I want to see an actual ancient coin featuring swan, so keeping the theme going!

To steal a note from a ROMA auction of Andrew McCabe's coins: Crawford notes that the letters displayed on the reverse of this coin probably stand for Lege Papiria De Assis Ponder and refer to the Papiria Law on the weight of bronze coins of 90 BC. Introduced the following year, the law authorized the minting of bronze asses on a Semuncial standard (1/24 to the Roman pound). As such, the initial series of this new denomination were marked with the letters L•P•D•A•P. Vendors and customers haggled over the value of the new and old asses leading to its rejection and eventual abandonment at the outbreak of the Social War.

Thank you to Professor Michael H. Crawford and Andrew McCabe for teaching us about coins and history.

Ex: Joe Sermarini, Ancient Forum Coins
Comment: In order to force Hannibal to retreat from Italy, Scipio Africanus attacked Carthaginian Spain and took Carthago Nova in 209 B.C. References most often identify this type as Punic, struck before 209 B.C., but they also note that the head is "Roman style." Some authorities believe, as we do, that this type was struck after 209, under Roman rule. Carthaginian coins sometimes depicted Barcid generals. This coin possibly depicts the Roman general Scipio Africanus

Does this count as "a couple of cows" in a loose sense. I think they are technically oxen, but none the less members of the Bovidae family.

I'd be likely to say, AEthelred II, 'Long Cross' issue, with 11th-c. imitations in Frisia and both sides (north and south) of the Baltic, but someone is likely to do better than that before I find the .jpgs.
