I believe only two magistrates' names have been recorded for the issue below. I have one issued by Aineas below. Anyone have Damophon's?

Here's a tetradrachm from Alexandria, which depicts Messalina, the wife of Claudius, as Ceres (or Demeter), holding a sheaf of corn to the right, and two figurines, a boy and a girl to the left, representing fertility. The play of words with the name Messalina and the Latin word messis, corn harvest, was aimed to flatter the empress.

This coin, dates from 43-44 CE (4th year of reign). It shows typical crudeness (especially with the flan), but it is above average in overall condition and the centering is decent.

Next: As collectors, we sometimes receive elegant old labels with the coins we purchase, written at a time when penmanship meant something.

So, how about a coin, any coin, that came with a fine, old collector's tag or label.

How about coins?(Apologies for the multiples as these are the seller's pics)

These came from what I'm told was a 100 y.o. collection. I acquired a few of these different lots.

They came in cool little coin boxes. If one knows the actual size of these coins, the lettering expressing the attributions is really small in hand. Micro-penmanship.

    Pretty cool.

The Commodus is quite worn, but the tag is from 1877:

This coin came with an old collection tag from Dr. Walter Stoecklin, who was an active collector in the early to mid 20th century. It is written in pen and ink -- not a ballpoint. You may read more about the Stoecklin collection here.

    Here is the collection tag:

    It reads:

    Rom Kaiserzeit
    Annia Galeria Faustina Mater
    Gemahlin d. Antoninus Pius
    geb 105, gest. 141
    AR denar
    Av. Buste r.
    DIVA FAVSTINA
    Rv. stehende Vesta
    AVGVSTA
    mit simpulum + Palladium

    Which is translated:

    Roman imperial period
    Annia Galeria Faustina, mother
    wife of Antoninus Pius
    Born 105, died 141
    AR denarius
    Obv: Bust right
    DIVA FAVSTINA
    Rev: Vesta standing
    AVGVSTA

I hesitate to post this one - as I think it would be appropriate to call into question my definition of "old" (53?). However, it is my favorite provenance, coming not only with an old tag, but with a story of a Christmas gift, a friendship, and a trip to Rome, not to mention that the coin is also one that I never tire of.

I really enjoy this coin. Wonderful history, beautiful die-cutting, long lost Empire, kinda nice that not too many are out there, and an incredible individual whom contributed so much to Ancients as a Hobby owned it before me.

    Excellent!

I've always enjoyed a provenance to a CT member's collection, and this coin doubled the enjoyment by having been in the collections of not one but two excellent members. Anyone have one from three?

Cool! I have always enjoyed that reverse type, @zumbly ! That's a very nice example, too. What makes it extra special is that it has been passed around CT like a doobie at a Phish concert!
