Just wanted to share this coin from the Buddhist/Hindu period of Sumatra, circa 650-1300 CE, that was probably issued during the Srivijaya Empire. It's amazing how similar the geometric designs are despite almost surely being uninspired by the Ionian type.

Wow, yeah. I doubt if they saw the Ionian design. Very cool coincidence, and you have a great coin.

China stopped producing the cash coins in the early twentieth century but they were still produced in parts of Vietnam until after WWII and even in Bali until the present-day, although they're primarily used for religious and aesthetic purposes now.

Indian Yaudheya coin around 3-4th century AD, minted in a republican confederacy as opposed to a monarchy. There's Kartikeya (Hindu god of war), holding spear and rooster with the Bramhi script saying 'Yaudheya Ganasya Jaya' meaning 'Victory to the people of Yaudheya'. Reverse has a goddess and a conch shell.

    * See BMC 17 Troas at xviii, citing Cavedoni (Spicil., p. 151) for the suggestion that the grazing horse, first depicted on the coins of Alexandria Troas ca. 300 BCE, is one of the horses of Erichthonius, father of Tros, after whom Troas was named.

Roman Republic, Lucius Marcius Censorinus, AR Denarius, 82 BCE. Obv. Laureate head of Apollo right, traces of control mark (unidentifiable) behind / Rev. The satyr Marsyas standing left, gazing upwards, raising right hand and holding wineskin over left shoulder; tall column behind him, surmounted by statue of draped figure (Minerva [RSC] or Victory [Crawford]); L. CENSOR downwards before him. Crawford 363/1d, RSC I Marcia 24d, Sear RCV I 281 (ill.), BMCRR 2657. 18 mm, 3.80 g, 5 h. [The coin refers to the legend of the satyr Marsyas challenging Apollo to a flute-playing contest. As the winner, Apollo got to choose the punishment for the loser -- namely, skinning Marsyas alive. Traditionally, the gens Marcia was descended from Marsyas; hence the reference.]

I just posted my two coins with gryphons (my preferred fancy spelling!) yesterday in the Mythical Creatures thread, so I won't post them here -- I'd rather see something new.
