I've always wanted one of those sea monster coins.:) Remember everybody, you can always post the same coin (TIF). If nobody posts within 12 hours I might post a monster that you can see.

Here's a pentassarion of Caracalla from Archialos with the emperor driving a biga of hippocampi (the hippocampus being the quintessential sea monster). I'm not 100% convinced they are not merely serpents, but it was sold as hippocamp.

Heya, did you mean to post another coin? That one's from Hadrianopolis, and it's Triptolemos in a biga of winged snakes. Cool coin, btw!

  9. TIF

    TIF Always learning.

Very cool coin! However, that's not the emperor on the reverse, it is Triptolemos and those aren't hippocamps, they're serpents.

I'll take that ugly coin off your hands if you now want to get rid of it ;) :D

Fortuna is one of my favorite Roman gods, since in contrast to most modern understanding of the word "fortune," Fortuna could bring good luck OR bad luck, and represented the capriciousness and randomness of life. Thus the phrase "... having the great good fortune..." is not redundant.
