Hello all. I came across this cent in my parents' coins. I also found several large cents, and plenty of Indian heads. This was the only Flying Eagle cent in there. What condition would you considering it to be in? Thanks for your help!
That's a nice high EF-45 or AU-50. Chief problem is the black stuff. Do you know what it is? By the way, don't try to remove it or mess with it; you'll devalue the coin. I'm just trying to figure out if it's the usual black stuff I see on these coins, or if it's something else.
Just don't mess with it. The reverse looks like it could be burned, or it could be the same stuff that's on the front.
Oops...sent too early. Anyway, I might consider submission to NCS for conservation, but I'd like to hear some other opinions on that.
VF-35 to EF-40 details but downgraded to Fine market $$$ because of p VF-35 to EF-40 details but downgraded to VF-30 (market value $$$) because of planchet color. I would let it soak in olive oil for a week then gentily blot dry to see if some of that would come off but no rubbing or brushing. But that's just me - if your not experienced with it probably not do anything though. It's got good details though.
I agree XF to AU I prefer mineral oil to olive oil. A couple of weeks followed by a couple of weeks in acetone. Finally a water rinse to remove acetone. And yes, blot dry - NO RUBBING Then post pics again so we can see any changes We be waiting:eat::eat:
I would leave it alone. The black stuff really doesn't look that bad IMO and if you mess with it there's a good chance you'll do more harm than good. Stick it in a Whitman folder as it is and I think you'll be quite pleased with how it looks.
In EF its at about the $100 + - range, not really worth the cost of NCS but the color will detract from that price. Richard
I tried to find out on their site but couldn't. Even if it was only $25 the costs of insured mail back and forth would bring the price up to the point where it would be close to or more than the difference in values. Richard
I would say that it is an xf coin, but not worth sending into as the grading fees and conservation is to much, btw will NGC now conserve coins as NCS is no longer??
Thanks for all the feedback everyone. I think I am going to leave the coin as it is, for now. I don't really think I should mess with it anytime soon, I would probably end up damaging it, more than likely.
Since we are assuming you don't have any experience with techniques such as olive oil or mineral oil send to NCS. Nice coin, and they can improve it.
yeah, it's like $30, plus shipping charges. Might cost you $50 total in the end. I'd still consider it, but would do more research first on what types of damage they can clean.
