I pick up junk silver lots below spot when I can, but I make sure I can identify the value and set a firm price ceiling. I'm pretty sure the ole "We've seperated $1000 of coins into 20 random mystery lots" is one of the oldest scams in the book. They know which lot is loaded. You will not win that lot.
That sort of scam, er, "chance auction" is also expressly against eBay's policy, but your odds of getting them to enforce it are about the same as your odds of winning the loaded lot.
I've seen these lots for years I always known they were scams. I figured if I could find a 100% reputable seller who dosent sell nothing but lots there might be a SLIGHT chance of getting something decent. But even then... NOPE haha
Here's my 1964 proof quarter, with what I call a "cartwheel proof" (2 pics, 1 coin). Well used proof dies for proof strikes should exhibit this.
I enjoyed reading about your experiment, OP. I think there is a part of everyone that hopes for a good deal.
I once bit on a roll of cents that had a S-mint IHC showing. Of course it was on 08 rather than an 09, but for $75 for an 08S in Fine I didn't complain. Plus a couple of pre 1920 Lincoln S's. Sometimes you get the elevator; sometimes you get the shaft.
Yes, it was a stupid buy, but it provided a service to the community who seem to have enjoyed finding out what he got in the lot.
I have always wondered what the quality was like. Probably a way for them to get rid of the modern stuff laying around. Sent from my ZTE B2017G using Tapatalk
