After Arnold defected, everything went downhill for him. I agree that he would have been a national hero eventually if he had died at Saratoga or had been so badly disabled that the British would not have gotten another worthwhile out of him. I said “eventually” because Horatio Gates, who was extremely overrated after Saratoga, saw to it that Arnold got not credit for what he did in that key Revolutionary War battle.
He did get a Commitia Americana medal in gold. When I took American History in high school, many long years ago, you still learned that he was the presiding general in the Battle of Saratoga which is rated as the turning point of the Revolutionary War. I bet you most high school students or even some older people could not tell you that he got his butt kicked at Camden because he had no plan, except maybe to turn and run.
And in similarity to General MacArthur, it was not the girlfriend as the primary concern. It was top secret information breeches, potentially aiding the enemy . Trust fail. Again.
No one.........military history is sadly lacking in present day colloquial academia........'every body is a winner.' Nobody comes in last. Frankly, I think it was 'Morgan' who turned the tide at Saratoga. Him and (dare I mention) 'Arnold'. Ya gotta see the 'Monument of the boot' if you ever see the battlefield there. Sanctifying.........reverent.....so sad to see a promising officer who put office and status above deeds done.....
Truman fired Mac Arthur for wanting to win the war militarily and not politically. I would suggest that all of you watch the movie "Mac Arthur," starring Gregory Peck.
You are going to trust Hollywood to interpret history for you? Their primary function is to entertain you, not present historical accurately. Please review the risks that were involved with the MacArthur strategy which have been covered here.
I would like the US Mint to coin a commemorative five dollar gold piece in honor of Dwight D. Eisenhower as President and Five Star General.
He has already had a circulating coin and two commemorative coins, one of which honored him as a five star general. Why is it so important he get a gold coin as well?
Just a joke. Nothing more, nothing less. Wehn I was a youngster, the papers were always commenting on his golf prowess. Ford ruined it for all future POTUS golf players. Ford scared the heck out of everybody on the course.
Ask every General in the Armed Forces in WW2 and Korea and every Admiral then, including Eisenhower? Including the Bataan Gang? I think they have all commented for history, already.
