Hello everyone! It's Friday again and another coin-themed thread. Calling this one "Five or Half Dime Friday!". Please post your Nickels and or Silver Half dimes. I have a few Shield nickels, Buffalo's and Jefferson nickels (not George either, ). The Half dime has been a "bucket lister" for me in Metal Detecting and in just coin collecting for a long time. Here are a few of my Five cent coins.....
Isn't it funny how many fine examples of the Buffalo Nickel, especially the 1938D. I have one toned. Also MS66.
It took me many years to find an example of this type that I really liked. This piece is graded PCGS MS-65, CAC. Back in early 1960s, the retail price for this coin in Gem Uncirculated was $23.50. I asked the department head at the Phildelphia Gimbels coin counter if they could get one. The response was "It's tough to find in that grade." Ultimately I bought an AU for $16 which wasn't everything I wanted. To put the $23.50 price into perspective, it would be $239 in today's dollars. Still given the fact that these coins sell a few thousand dollars in MS-65 today, you would still be way ahead of the game. These coins are hard to find fully struck up. The dies are often clashed or failing to one degree or another. There was simply too much detail in a very small space. Over the years, I had several of the coins for the type. Here are a couple of them.
