This pile came on Saturday afternoon and I was pretty excited. Almost as excited as Clint Eastwood. I have yet to spend time identifying them but there are obviously several different emperors that are easily recognizable. For ~$5.50 a piece, I think I did pretty well. I love these chunky coins! Feel free to post anything you deem relevant!
I can make out at least 6 different emperors. Several of which I didn't yet have. Gonna have a fun time with this group I did promise my wife that I would lay off the coin buying...but I told myself that this group will give me a bit of work for a bit and for the price I couldn't say no.
A very nice assortment at a very good per coin price. Plenty of coins to research there. Do you plan to clean them?
I would like to see if I could touch up the Nero some. I'm not sure if the other could really be helped much. I kind of like the solid green one as well.
Very cool and a very good deal! Lot's of fun to be had with that group. I have a couple of Diocletians and a Maximian from Alexandria, too. Diocletian, AD 284-305. Refs: Dattari 5850; Similar to BMCG 2550 and RCV 13345 (different placement of Є).
It will be nice to see how you get on with attributions. I think you might have more than 6 emperors in there.....
I'm sure there are a few more as well. But there were the ones I noticed right off the bat. The others will take some time.
Cue the music from The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly... Great coins. I think I noticed a Numerianus in there, here's mine... Numerian, Feb/March 283 - Oct/Nov 284 A.D. Roman Provincial Egypt Billon Tetradrachm, 8.26 grams, 20.7 mm, Alexandria mint Obverse: AK M A NOVMEPIANOC CEB Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust right Reverse: Athena seated left on high backed throne, wearing crested helmet, long scepter in left hand, Nike offering wreath in right hand. Reference: Köln 3192-3193; Dattari 5607, Emmett 4013; Sear 12272 I particularly enjoy the patina on this coin, as well as the finely crafted reverse.
If there is indeed a Numerian in the lot, that will be my first coin of his I love that reverse on yours. Nike is really well done. The couple I have with Nike being held, she is rather "mushy".
Woah, deja vu! Almost looks like most of the coins from this lot https://www.biddr.com/auctions/auctiones/browse?a=1807&l=1960115
Woah! That's (most of) them! Here is the blurb from where I bought them: Lot Of 12 Roman Provincial Alexandria Egypt Billon Tetradrachms, Time of Nero through Diocletian Interesting lot with some nicer specimens, including a really nice Year 12 Gallienus and a Carus. Sourced from various auction houses, mainly Auctiones GmbH and Leu lots.
What a deal. Gallienus and Nero are probably worth 10x what you paid for them. The rest are still banging good deals. Best source I ever found sold these for $15 a pop. Carinus: Carus: And a pair of beautifully green/blue Diocletians:
