I did see the gold spouse coin take a big drop the other day. The big dude on Coin vault reduced the price of the NGC 70 from $1999.95 (On flex payment) to $1399.95(on customer for life payment). Now that is what I call a coins price tanking. Top of that he was going to refund the $600 that some poor .... overpaid at first. I have never seen a coins price drop that fast. WOW.

Not a real feeding frenzy on e-bay on the first spouses-looks like prices are coming off,or will be. Didn't know pcgs put out "first strike" coins; misleading at best. Brings up the question of how are these coins being slabbed so fast? And of course, why would anyone buy one(extreme premium for what?) Asto getting e-mail confirmations :eek:ne week my first spouse coins were shipped, the next week my order was cancelled! To anyone wanting to order 5 of the next...good luck!

I wouldn't consider that a meaningful indicator considering how absurdly inflated the price was to begin with. Even the new price is inflated.

Commemoratives have always sold way above bullion value. That hasn't stopped people from buying them in the past.

    silver vs: gold

modern commems sold more than 7,000,000 pc before. and during 1980's, mint sold over 2,000,000 pc easily. now it is only few hundred thousands. and the unc version sold 50,000 more or less. same happened to gold commems. but the silver is still better than gold. take spouses gold for example. now only trade around 25% to 33% premium. and it is considered few and rare. what a lousy premium. buy any new products from the mint. the dealers can easily sell them 25% to 33% over issued price. example: clad proof set, silver proof set, mint set, am eagle proof or unc coins. modern commems. all these came out with 25% premium easily. why silver is better than gold?. take 3 pc silver anniversary. $100.00 issued price and it went up to $500.00. that's a 400% premium. take 3 pc gold anniversary. cost $2,610.00 and it went up double only.

If I doubled my $2600, then I wouldn't be complaining. LOL

Otherwise, I do see your point.

That's a very unusual case. Look at any other silver commemorative over the past 10 years and most of them are selling for little more than their issue price. Look at the Ben Franklin commemoratives from last year. There was a frenzy of speculation, but the current price is way below twice the issue price. Also, I don't see you complaining about the premium over bullion for silver issues, which typically cost $35 for $12 worth of silver. Thats about a 200% above bullion markup.

There are exceptions, like the 2001 Buffalo, but they are exceptions. Your premise just isn't backed up by the facts.

The 2006 BENJAMIN FRANKLIN COMMEMORATIVES are a very good buy now considering the mintage was only 250,000 total for Proofs and Uncs for each coin. Proofs 142,000 and uncs only 58,000.I do not know of any dealers who are selling them for less then what they paid for them. The 2006 COMMEMORATIVE price will go up becauseof the mintage.

I agree they are a good buy now. Here are 3 recent ones that sold on eBay for below issue price. Mintage and demand are key. Not what metal they're made of.

If you plot out the mintages of all of the silver commemoratives you will see the latest releases are all very high mintage. In contrast there are 10 released that fall under 30,000 mintage and those are mostly reasonably priced. I doubt we see one go under 30,000 again unless it is the worst design of the century, even the Little Rock is up over 36,000 with them still selling today.

It's not clear what we're discussing here. elaine70 is saying that low mintages are a symptom of low demand (which might be true), but it's also true that low mintages can result in greater appreciation. The greatest appreciation recently has been for two issues (20th anniversary ASE and 2001 Buffalo) with mintages of 250,000, hardly rare issues. There's obviously something else contributing to demand for these issues.

I think if you plot out the mintages then it makes a lot more sense as each coin probably must be looked at within its own series. The silver reverse proof is a low mintage relative to all the other coins in the series with the exception of the 1995 which is selling for almost 5 thousand.

The silver buffalo was an anomaly based on a very beautiful design, that is where I think the appreciation is. But I doubt that coin goes up much for many many years though until the others in the series catch up since it was a very high mintage.

For ther spouse coins I think it is too early to say where these first two fall as the series has just started. If demand is higher in later years then these will go for more than bullion, but if mintages drop drastically then they may end up at bullion long-term. I see on Ebay they have hundreds up for sale so it is not unexpected prices may drop as there could be fewer buyers than sellers.

Go get yourself a few of the The 2006 BEN FRANKLIN COMMEMORATIVES They are a very good buy now considering the mintage was only 250,000 total for Proofs and Uncs for each coin. Proofs 142,000 and uncs only 58,000.

Even on e-bay there is only like 20 for sale. most dealers I have talked with about them say they are sitting on them til the flood of other stuff is over the mint is putting out.

NGC and PGCS have low pop on the Franklins 69's and 70's for a modern coin:eek:

As of right now, I'm coming up with 232 listings when searching on "Martha Washington" under Coins and Currency. Just about all of them are gold coins.

I've never understood why people think that tens of thousands of commemoratives is "low" mintage. It would be for a circulation coin, but not for a coin specifically made for collectors. The premiums are unwarranted in my opinion, and they should sell for a modest premium over bullion value.
