That's a lot better than my first Nero It was cheap and I didn't have one, My second try was better. But I actually bought this one for the provencial city and the reverse. PHRYGIA. Acmoneia. Nero, AD 54-68. Æ19, 3.8g, 12h; c. AD 62; Lucius Servenius Capito, archon , with his wife Julia Severa. Obv: NEPON KAIΣAP ΣEBAΣTOΣ; Laureate head right; crescent before. Nice buy! I still don't have a Nero from Alexandria though I've often been tempted. Whenever I see one of these I recall with a shiver the story of Giovanni Dattari, the famous collector of Roman-Egyptian coins, acquiring and then melting down thousands of Nero tetradrachms because they were so common as to be worth more as bullion. Coin #001 in my coin catalog (one of ten in my first ever purchase of ancients) is this Roman provincial from Antioch.

Congratulations on your first Nero, Gerard! Emperor Nero is definitely a Roman ruler whose coin is a necessary addition to any ancient coin collection. I have only one bearing his likeness. I have Judaean coins which were struck during his reign but don't have his portrait on them.
Excellent coins everyone! I'm thrilled with the Nero I picked up. To be honest, I didn't think the bid was going to hold.

All these nice Neros drives me to show my worst. Both denarii are fourrees. The first is a partially peeled fourree of the foil technique. The style is good. The reverse has a classic example of a circular seam where the two silver foil sections came together. Wear exposed just enough of the I and V to be 'classic'. I regret there are unattractive deposits on the obverse field on top of the silver. Were it not for that, I would really like this coin as a definitive fourree. The second fourree of Nero is as different as can be. The style is barbarous not resembling Rome at all. The silver was not foil but probably applied by dipping in a molten alloy (eutechtic?) or by tossing hot copper blanks in a powered alloy. I suppose this also is a classic example of what it is but what it is impresses me less. I would like to know where these were made and spent. I have had both for over 25 years.
My first Nero was the AE as type featuring Nero as Apollo Citharoedus that I got from a pick bin for $5... I'm sure my memory represents it as much nicer than it really was, but man, do I regret trading it away! Anyway, don't trade away that first Nero, it is a keeper!! My two Neros now are a Lugdunum sestertius... ... and an AE 17 from Myrina in Aeolis, citing both Nero and his mother Agrippina as gods, ΘΕΩΝ ΝΕΡΩΝΑ CΕΒΑCΤΟΝ and ΘΕAΝ ΑΓΡΙΠΠΙΝΑΝ:
NERO As: right face Obverse: Nero, bare headed facing right Inscription clockwise from bottom: IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TRP P P Reverse: Winged Victory, walking left, holding shield inscribed SPQR Inscription: S -------- C (left and right) Nero As: left face Obverse: Nero, bare headed facing left Inscription clockwise from bottom: IMP NERO CAESAR AVG P MAX TRP P P Reverse: Winged Victory, walking left, holding shield inscribed SPQR Inscription: S -------- C (left and right)
I think from memory my first Nero was this Ara Pacis Ae AS, a little worn but a very hard to find coin in good nick.
Very nice Nero Gerard and more so since it has passed through the hands of two other great guys here. I've much enjoyed the Nero fest but have none to contribute. Good going on a great coin!

One day I'll upgrade on it. Edit *** the right face Nero for some reason the wrong one copied, no doubt my fault*** But I like the reverse
My first and only Nero. Popped up at my local coin shop for $19. I figured it was worth it to finally get a coin with Nero's portrait.
