I hope we get to see how this turns out, and that Grandpa didn't clean all of his coins with baking soda so that they would all be nice and shiny.
You're right. You win. Go with PCGS. OP please keep my information in mind for future submissions of mint errors or varieties. Best of luck!
Do you have to check the variety box on your submission in order for them to even check for the wide am or will they look and charge you for it?
"Red Book" varieties are not charged extra at any of the grading services. I don't have one handy at the moment. If it's in the Red Book, then just include the variety, otherwise they might not verify it. If it's not in the Red Book, you'll have to pay extra.
There is a spot on the right side of the submission form to include charges for errors/varieties , so when you list them in the line items part they will automatically know and proceed accordingly. Make sure you print out a fresh form as the forms change from time to time and are dated.
Question for everyone and a little update. How do you ship your coins to PCGS? I followed the instructions on the website and shipped them USPS Registered priority mail with insurance. The receipt said it should have been there within 2-3 days. Its going on 12 days now. I sent in a request to see what is taking so long and they told me that Registered priority mail with insurance takes anywhere up to 25 days to arrive to its destination. I find it hard to believe that everyone ships this way, especially with some of the impatient people in the coin world I know.
It's because every single person that handles the package has to sign off on it slowing the delivery time down.
Ignore the priority mail part and time estimate. They are irrelevant to registered mail. Registered mail only travels one stop per day, and is kept locked up overnight. It can take a couple weeks.
Unless it’s way over the insurance limit usually priority or express mail. I don’t have the patience for registered waiting a couple weeks just for it to get there.
