My parents went to Rome in 1960 and brought me back an ancient denarius which I lost years later. Now my mom tells me it was a reproduction..LOL..then she bought 2 sets of the 1964 Kennedy proof sets and I still have them, complete with the original mailing envelope with our address at the Army War College in Carlisle,PA. I believe they're worth less now than when we got them, unless you count sentimental value.
My grandmother started me out with a 1901 Indian Head Cent which was worth .07 cents back in 1960 when I was 5 years old.I was so amazed that I could get .07cents for 1 cent, that I started collecting and have not stopped since. Thanks to my grandma-I was bitten by the collecting bug.:thumb:
The day I was born my grandmother gave my mom a brand new cent nickel dime quarter and half. For my date of birth coins, sure wish I had those coins now had to be gem bu for sure 1947.
I loved the steel cents. You could still find them in circulation now and then when I was 8....
Mine is not very exciting from reading all these interesting posts, but it was the 2004 peace medal nickel. After that i was hooked. Just recently i purchased a 1921 Morgan for 12 bucks!!
Several foreign coins back in the 1950's. Then, about 1958 I received a Barber quarter in change at an amusement park. Back when I was a kid, my pocket change often included "silver" pennies, Walking Liberty Half Dollars, and wartime Jeffersons. Sure wish I had saved them.
My first coin was a 1901 indian head penny that my grandparents gave me when I was 6 (1996) I set it aside in a drawer and then it peaked my interest when I was 8 and I put it in a 2x2. I still have that in the 2x2 I put it in back then along with a few others my grandparents have given me. ... and it was all downhill from there.
My first coins were the state quarters (yes, I'm young) But I didn't really get in to it till my dad brought his old collection of silver dimes, buffalo and war nickels, and wheat ennies down in 2003
I was probably 11 or 12 when I was playing with friends near my home... We were often going the flea market the other side of the street where an old man was slowly and painfully selling his money collection. I remember, he had nice things... but I was very young and knew nothing about it! Once I saw a nickel with an amerindian head on one side and a buffalo on the other! It was a 1920 buffalo nickel! Well, I think this is my first... There's also a 1896 Newfoundland 1 Cent in pretty good condition that I own since.. forever. Anyway! Nice thread! Max
My dad gave me two proof sets from my birthyear, 1983. Shortly after that he gave me a really nice 1899-O Morgan dollar, which is when I really got hooked.
Hello folks! My first 3 coins I was given was a Mexican 1975 5 peso coin, a 1973 1 peso coin, and a 1974 50 Centavo coin. That got me hooked. :smile
My first coin was a 1909 V.D.B. (not an S ) cent that my grandmother got me from the coin counter at a department store in the early 70's. And I still have it.
