I meant "Finnish" not "Finish" What is the true rarity of this AL-Bronze issue? I hear tales of extreme rarity to just a Krause created myth. Any ideas, thoughts, opinions? KM# 31 5 MARKKAA 4.5000 g., Aluminum-Bronze, 23 mm. Obv: Wreath divides denomination Rev: Shielded arms within wreath divide date And it's Brass counterpart: KM# 31a 5 MARKKAA 4.5500 g., Brass, 23 mm. Obv: Denomination divided by wreath Rev: Shielded arms within wreath divides date below
In my observation, there is no real difference in rarity between the two and vast majority of people don't even bother trying to figure out the composition.
The "S" is not a mint mark, but the mint official's initial. For this issue it would have been: S 1912-1947 Isak Gustaf Sundell
Wouldn't be too far off if it was a "Krause-created myth:" I know of some "error" citations in the SCWC that I suspect are probably NOT errors.
I don't know if that helps you, but in my old Finnish coin catalogue (Suomen kolikoiden ja seteleiden luettelo n. 1400-2001, published 2004) is the following information for these two versions: Al-bronze 5 markkaa (4.5 g, 23mm) - mintage 618 000, prices in euros 20; 10; 5; 2; 1 Brass 5 markkaa (4.55 g, 23 mm) - mintage 5 538 000, prices in euros 6; 2; 0,5; -; - Prices are probably not valid anymore, but that should give an idea of "rarity"
