I recently purchased a rather common commemorative proof coin in an antique shop for a bargain price. It was in the mint plastic holder. While I was looking at the coin, the employee told me I could take it out of the holder and handle it if I wanted to. I explained to him that I was trying to determine if anyone had already done that and left fingerprints on it. It turned out not to have fingerprints so I bought it. There was a second canadian commemorative that had been opened and someone's fingerprint was clearly visible on the obverse, so I left it there.
