Anyways, I decided this would be an interesting idea for a thread, to try and find a counterfeit on Ebay in which me or someone else here will notify Ebay about and hopefully have the listing removed. Here's the first one, an fake 1804 Dollar, asking $10,000 http://www.ebay.com/itm/us-dollar-Coin-1804-/262031811755?hash=item3d025024ab
You'd probably do more good for the hobby if you wrote a book, Detecting Counterfeit Coins for Dummies. Chris
Part of the problem are "replica coins" that are listed by unknowing or unscrupulous sellers as being genuine.
This one ends soon.. told him it was fake.. no reply from him http://www.ebay.com/itm/1854-Libert...e-/391245418780?ssPageName=ADME:X:AAQ:US:1123
This past week there was a seller on Ebay who listed around 5 early 1800s Italian States silver crowns. All of them were fakes that are sold in Italy for around $15. each. At least he listed the weights on these coins and all of them were around 2.5 grams light on coins that were in EF condition. In Italy they are sold as replica (riconio) coins and they are very well made but are usually 2 grams light in weight. I see them pop on Ebay and being sold as genuine. I emailed the seller but sold he them anyways. A word to the wise, check weights on any of these European crowns
Here's a 1763 Northumberland Shilling currently on eBay. Seller is in Hong Kong. Literally no other information in the listing. If this were real it would be $2K easy. It's only at $9 now, so maybe everyone assumes it's a fake.
