    @dougsmit: What a complicated and greatly misunderstood coin! There are too many conflicting attributions for that coin. Desikachari, Biddulph, and Chattopadhyaya attributed it to the Cholas. R. Nagaswamy and Ganesh attributed these to the Madurai Nayakas. And Mitchiner attributes these coins to Perunjiya Pallavas of Sendamangalam who ruled during 1221-1278 in Salem district.

    My personal preference is to attribute this to Perunjiya Pallavas of Sendamangalam. Nagaswamy's reasoning for attributing this to the Madurai Nayakas is just too weak...
