I have seen all of these great coins on this forum with a hippo on the reverse. I thought it was about time that I had one so I just bought one in Today's Naville sale. It does not hurt that it is ex: Dattari and is a plate coin. I also really like the bust of tiberius on the obverse. It will be an interesting addition to my 12 Caesars collection. Nice coin. My interest in Ptolemaic coins has caused me to look more at Egyptian coins in general, like from the early Roman Empire. But for now, can't say no to an opportunity to post my only Tiberius aka my best cleaning job to date. Tiberius, Roman Empire AR denarius Obv: TI CAESAR DIVI AVG F AVGVSTVS, laureate head right Rev: PONTIF MAXIM, Livia (as Pax) seated right, holding long scepter in her right hand and olive branch in her left; plain chair legs Mint: Lugdunum Date: 14-37 AD Ref: RIC 26
Nice pickup!! My first ex-Dattari was also a Tiberius hippo from Naville, the first ex-Dattari lot in their first sale which they were offered. It was a very good deal. Apparently most other bidders didn't notice when that section had started. Overall bidding increased exponentially shortly thereafter and I was shut out of almost everything. EGYPT, Alexandria. Tiberius Year 5, CE 18/9 AE obol, 20 mm, 4.45 gm Obv: bare head right Rev: hippopotamus right; TIBEPIoY above; [L] E in exergue Ref: Emmett 62.5, R1; Geissen 47; Dattari-Savio 102 (this coin); RPC 5082 ex Dattari collection (Giovanni Dattari, 1858-1923) Matching coins to the pencil rubbings in Dattari-Savio can be difficult. Here's this coin's plate picture:
Hippos are cute animals. Big, but still cute. I believe the animal behind/under Nilus on the reverse of this drachm to be a hippo Hadrian, Drachm struck at Alexandria, c. AD 131-132 AVT KAI TRAI ADRIA CEB, Draped and laureate bust of Hadrian right Nilus leaning left. Behind an hippopotamus. It likely is a hippo. It was a popular theme with Hadrian in Egypt: HADRIAN 117 - 138 A.D. AV Aureus (7.14 g.) Rome ca. 134 - 138 A.D. RIC 33 var. Very cool, @Orfew ! And a Dattari plate coin, too! Icing on the cake! Here's my most recent hippo acquisition: Otacilia Severa, AD 244-249. Roman AR Antoninianus, 2.90 g, 21.4 mm, 1 h. Rome, AD 248. Obv: OTACIL SEVERA AVG, bare-headed and draped bust, right, on crescent. Rev: SAECVLARES AVGG, hippopotamus standing right; IIII in exergue. Refs: RIC 116b; Cohen 43; RCV 9160; CRE 526; Hunter 8.
Great hippos everyone! Thanks for posting those. @TIF that is a great coin and acquired much in the same manner as my own. Mine was the second Ex Dattari coin to be auctioned. I guessed the same as you, that some may have missed the beginning of the Ex Dattari coins. Of course yours is a nicer coin than mine too and its condition may have chased some away. That is fine by me. I will be quite happy to put my coin in its appointed spot within my Abafil tray. The prices today sure were healthy to say the least. I felt lucky to get mine for what I consider to be a steal for a Dattari plate coin.
Unfortunately the only hippo I have is on the cover of Hatari. But I love the movie. I can't find a photo of my cover so I had to use this one.
Nifty coin, congrats! No hippos in my collection, alas, but I can contribute a theme song for this thread...
