it is an honor to see a complete set i have honestly searched for years to complete a set of lincolns.. lovely simply lovely darn it
Congratulations on completing a really tough album with as many quality coins as you have in it. I have the same book but unfortunately mine has several more holes to fill before mine is finished. How long did you work to complete this set?
Lance, I'm sure you know how much I love that lowly little copper coin. You've accomplished something that 99.9% of all US collectors have wanted to do - even if they won't admit it publically! Absolutely Outstanding!
I believe I need the 09SVDB, 09S and 14-D, and I need to catch up on my moderns. I haven't updated the book since probably 2000. Those three keys are going to be slow coming, because I have a young family and my wife and I have sizable school debt still on the books. It's going to be hard to convince my wife to let me spend $200+ to get any one of these. Though, if one of my coins turns out to be genuine, there may be serious found money generated and I will allocate some of that to support my collection.
Congrats on reaching a milestone, nice set you have there! I'm at the same place you were before you got your '22 plain. I've debated with myself whether or not I need that one for my set. After all, I have all the dates and mintmarks and this is someone elses idea of what comprises a set. I have an unstruck planchet I found in a bag of wheats that just might go in that hole. It has the nice patina of an older wheat so I could say it's a '22 and it's about as plain as you can get.
Great job! I am still missing the famous 1909-s vdb. I have two certified by NGC but non raw "yet". I am also missing the 1014-D and 1931-S as well. I most likely would have finished the "raw" set but unfortunately, my addiction for other coins doesn't allow me to save for these missing links
Thanks for the nice words, guys. It feels good to finish a large set. I've done Peace dollars and Capped Bust halves but only in plastic and they're tiny compared to all the Lincolns for 99 years. My Dansco large cents still needs the biggies. 1793 Liberty Cap, 1799, and 1804, and couple of them are AG but that's all I could handle financially. I'll probably be at this for a while too. If I ever get it done I will have a fun run of cents from 1793 - 2007. I've been thinking about Seated half dollars but I'm not sure I can complete it ('70-CC, '78-S, etc.). I love old gold but it's crazy expensive. <sigh> Lance.
Look around and take your time. Have you every thought about goign outside your comfort zone and trying foreign or ancient? I am thinking maybe an 19th century Mexican 8 reales, or a Roman emperor set, or even just a nice type set of a country. Its nice to change things up. I would never dissuade you from SL halves, I love the things, but thankfully I do not have the need to complete a set so I never worried about the infamous 78-S.
Lol, everyone has those, some just have larger ones than others. Just suggesting that sometimes its fun to collect a completely different area of numismatics. At times, I will go back and look at my US coins, or spend more time on 19th century Mexican, or 18th century Russian, or even my Notgeld collection. Its amazing how different yet still interrelated it all is. I would never say to spend any serious money until you got yourself up to speed, but something like buying a mixed group of Northern Song chinese coins, and then buying Hartill or Gorny's guide to them, and just going through identifying all of the varieties you have can be a great change of pace, educational, all economically.
