That's a bummer. Not sure if you are in the DFW area. Going to try a few spots around here.

Thats what I was thinking. A lot of old areas where there has been civilization for years where a lot of coins could have been dropped. Hopefully not too picked clean. My LCS rent metal detectors so maybe one of these days I will give it a run.

Would love to hear if you find something. Got to love the history up there.

    How is your detector?
I would sell it and upgrade to a Garret 250..at least.
Im saving for a garret atPro right now.
Skip the parks and beaches and hit up the woods. Cellar holes, rock walls, trash pits, wells, old forts, etc.
Research and overlaying old maps is key. Every time you do research, you will not be let down.
If youre from new england let me know. I have tons of spots.

Getting my metal detector Saturday. Going to give this one a try and if I really like detecting I will probably upgrade it. Thanks for the advice on spots to hit. I am down in Texas right now. Originally from Upstate New York. Would like to try to hit a few spots up there when I go in the summer.

    doug444 STAMPS and POSTCARDS too!

Hurricane Sandy changed everything along beaches from Virginia to Massachusetts, so don't be too negative on beaches. Wish I could have gotten to Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, on the next day! Lots of offshore coins over the years.

About as Upstate as you can go. Plattsburgh. Would love to find something from the Battle of Plattsburgh era War of 1812.

LOL Go down to Catamount Mountain about 35 miles due SW of Plattsburgh and look for the nail clipper I lost during survival training in August 1965.

Then the old sarge gave me 10 demerits because I couldn't skin the bear we caught for dinner.

Lol. I know exactly where that is. Not far from Whiteface. If I find a nail clipper you will be the first to hear from me!

Yep, I'm in the Dallas area. - I might hold a contest here on CT and make my metal detector the prize...

I'm in the Dallas area too (Plano). Maybe we can meet up and search together some time. My detector is a piece of junk, but you never know what you'll find if you're in the right place at the right time.

My dad lost his wedding ring in the back yard a decade ago and we've swept the area a few times looking for it. No luck on 3 separate searches, although I've dug up about 3 dozen nails/old coke tabs/bottle caps.

I'd like to research the laws for searching in local areas - where would some of the old TH hands suggest starting my research? Also, if you have a copy of that landholder's search agreement, I'd appreciate if you PM'ed it to me too.

That sounds good. I live south of DFW in the HEB area, Going to try a field close to where I live for starters. They use to have the Euless Arbor Daze years ago in this area. I will let you know how it goes and maybe we can get together and try to find some stuff around here.
I haven't got a copy of the landholder's search agreement yet. I will advise if I get one.

I live in Fort Worth, so pretty close to some of y'all. I would recommend old churches (NOT GRAVEYARDS) with permission from the people who run it. Maybe you could try somewhere along the Trinity like an old boat landing somewhere if it's legal. I don't have a metal detector... I should get one. Have fun and can't wait to see your finds!

Thanks for the recommendations. Heading to Forth Worth shortly to the hockey game at the convention center. I will post my findings on the forum (if any) If you end up getting a metal detector let me know.

Here is the agreement I used. It is not necessarily legal, and I do not guarantee that it will stand up in court. The image can be enlarged twice.

Well got the detector today and went out to a field close to my house. Found an old Dr Pepper can from the 50's buried about 7 inches down (yes I live in Texas). Also this item which I think is from a lawnmower. No coins or anything good. Was only out there about an hour to give it a try. Guess I need to work on the settings a bet.

Have a friend hide some pennies or nickels in that field, see if you can find them - that's the test for settings (6 inches deep).
