it took me 3 years to get my second sasanian coin after an early coin show pick up, but i finally got one. this is my first coin that is holed as well. i didn't even notice the hole at first from the sellers pic (he wasn't hiding it at all, he always uses a lighter background....and added the hole to the description), i just thought it was a nice looking sasanian with sharp details. the hole blends in with the crescents and didn't really bother me at all...they sometimes do.

    anyway, here it is...

The hole isn't bothersome at all, it's nice.

    Nice addition. My only Sasanian:

Khusru II (don't have my notes handy...)

My only holed coin. Not an ancient...but hasn't been in use for a long time:

For whatever reason tokens from this base are often found holed, in various denominations and styles. No idea what was going on, too much fun I suppose.

Much better style than the majority of LSS, (Late Sassanid silvers). :)

Spectacular Chris, shame about the hole but the details make up for it.

    thanks for the comments everyone,

a a couple of weeks ago when i was in nashville, i stopped by the andrew jackson plantation. they had a couple of period coins, tokens, and medal on display. i think everyone that was NOT a replica, was holed.

here is a pic of 3 coins that were found in the slaves quarters, the coin on the left is unidentifiable (to me at least). the coin on the right and top are both spanish coins, reales of some denomination. on the top coin you can just make out the date, 1795. i thought it was pretty interesting.

    Cool stuff.

If a dealer had them as normal coins, they'd be in the junk bin.

Nice coins everyone, congrats to Chris on a great addition. At the moment I have only one of Peroz for show-and-tell. Tough coins to photograph in my experience - the designs have sharp angles that go every which direction - they are difficult to light...

Do you consider the above coin holed? I have seen several thin flan Sasanians including the one above that I believe were struck on flans that had a thin spot or hole that was plugged at the mint either before or after striking. Most coins that had this repair probably flattened the plug more than this one which shows clearly obverse right and reverse bottom (3H axis) just inside the inner circle of dots. IMHO holes plugged to benefit collector value are not good things but those that were part of the manufacturing process are a different matter. I watch for these but don't pay extra. I would love to hear if anyone has mentioned this as a possibility in published literature or if any of you have examples.

I don't expect as much out of Sasanian photos as some others but do find Peroz more shiny than most. I wonder if it is a matter of alloy or even something like a time when they polished dies. I approach it by shooting these in bounced light or with a ring light. The relief used on Sasanians often makes this work well even if the coin is not shiny. More coin photos are ruined by high contrast and high saturation than the opposites.

I wasn't able to find what I considered a match but the photo is small. The A seems likely but the first letter struck me as an L which is not an option. I am really not good with these. Does anyone have a better link than the one I gave above?
