We shopped frequently at Giant in Lancaster PA when my wife lived there (1988-1993). My parents shopped frequently at Martin's in Hagerstown MD, which I believe is also under the Ahold umbrella. In both cases, I think the meat counters were full-service. (I remember receiving, without having asked, a quick demo of how to clean a squid. I still have a clipping from the sale flyer -- "NEVER FROZEN, TUBES AND TENTACLES". Possibly my all-time favorite out-of-context food ad.)
Jeff your correct... and having serviced both Giant's Pryor to my retirement it always seemed a power struggle between the two ....from what I was experiencing....having two companies joining as one ...there always is.... as both thinks their way is the right one. In pa I loved to service Karns prime markets of Hershey as well other towns. Yes Martins is under the same umbrella, and a funny story that Giant of Landover built a state of the art store in Eldersburg Md. 1/2 mile down the road was a Martins....and The locals 8 out of 10 shopped Martins. Next thing you know ...Giant gets hit with a suit for monopoly in the area...and forced to sell 1 location. So Safeway got a brand new store as they sold that location,to complying with the legal actions.
Don't remember them. The biggies were Giant and Stauffers of Kissel Hill, which I think is still independent. We shopped at those two, and at a couple of small farm-market type places that I believe aren't there any more (Funk's was one, I forget the other -- and Roots, of course, but that was only open Tuesdays).
