Being that I am an Air Force brat, that I love aviation and admire all who are bitten by the aviation bug - especially those who overcame obstacles to become aviators and proudly and honourably serve their country....

The Tuskegee Airman earned this honour long ago, this was long overdue and I am glad there are a precious few of them still around to see their accomplishment memorialized on a circulating coin. Practically none of the State quarters or National Park quarters meant anything to me. But this is a keeper.

Those brave young men did their training at an airfield near the coast in South Carolina. My wife and I love to frequent Beaufort and always make a pilgrimage to see the monuments erected to them at the Army Airfield in Walterboro South Carolina..... Last time we were there I threatened to take my metal detector out of the trunk. I thought my wife was going to stroke.

In change? Where the heck are you to get that coin in change? Standing outside the mint? LOL
Here in Montana, I'm still waiting for coins dated 2020. LOL
What a neat find from the wild.

Very nice, @scottishmoney; I'm still waiting for the Tallgrass Praire ATB quarters here in Tennessee. Anyway, out of curiosity, are you planning on getting the 5oz version as well?

It is a great coin for a great bunch of guys. I've had several rolls of them pass through my hands already. Had to stop myself from keeping an entire roll haha.

As a college student training to be a pilot and someone who really likes WWII history I love this coin. I just wish they'd start appearing in circ sooner! Haven't found one yet :(

Those brave men never lost a bomber when flying fighter escort for the bombing missions. Never. That was an amazing accomplishment. I've never heard of any other WWII fighter escort group that can claim the same.
(Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. I love to learn more about history!)

I've actually met Alexander Jefferson(now aged 99 years) on a couple of occasions. He commented in his book that when he was a POW in Germany he felt like the fascists treated him better than a lot of Americans did. Getting off the ship after returning to the states the person at the end of the gangplank off the ship yelled "Whites to the right, ######'s to the left.

These guys were fighting more for the future than the present. Real heroes fight for an ideal that might not have been realised yet.
