My favorite is the eagle on the Gobrecht dollar. I wish I owned one. Here’s a few favorites of coins I have or used to own
I know there's already a 2017 uncirculated version earlier in the thread, but I think the palladium eagle reverse design looks great in proof also. The detail really stands out with the high relief design, almost too much (kind of makes it look like a reptile's scales or like it's wearing some kind of armor rather than feathers, to me at least). After much thought I'm still not certain if I like this or the eagle on the Walker reverse with its softer detail (among other differences) better. I am also partial to the Ike eagle reverse, especially the brown box versions with the funky yellow/gold toning, as I loved space stuff as a kid (posted previously to the Ike thread). Finally, speaking of high relief designs, I also like the reverse eagle on the 2009 UHR rendition of the St. Gaudens Double Eagle (I know that as bullion this version is less impressive as a coin than the one that Mainebill posted but I like the eagle better due to the amount of curvature in the wings owing to the high relief - I tried to capture this effect with the lighting in the photo below).
Walker FTW. You are right. That relief looks like armor and very reptilian. It’s said birds came from reptiles, but still. I like my birds fluffy and cuddly, not looking all scaly.
See post #15 (3rd pic) which is from the 2008 Bald Eagle Commemorative Coin Program. https://www.usmint.gov/learn/coin-and-medal-programs/commemorative-coins/bald-eagle
Love the reverse eagle on the walking liberty half!! Wish they would make a special silver eagle with that reverse in a limited set! That would be awesome
I'm not well versed on 18th century coins, so I had to look it up. It deserves a picture (and yes, I know I'm replying to an old post)
