Votes for Women! The Susan B. Anthony is an unfortunate case. Frank Gasparro submitted at least TWO other designs, based on SBA as a young and middle aged woman. She was not "beautiful" but was striking. The Citizens Coin Advisory Committee rejected those an insisted on the Old Lady we have today. The Sacagawea is timeless, a Madonna and Child. It is hard to argue against the coin, though much could be said about the political wrangling that went into the selection of artists. Glenna Goodacre is a good Democrat. She is also a good artist.
Here is a Gobrecht Pattern Dollar. It basically has the Obverse of a Seated Dollar with a variation of the eagle that was on the Flying Eagle Cent on its reverse. Obverse: Reverse: Not cheap, but very nice!!
According to a recent coin magazine I’m reading, Sacagawea is considered a traitor by many Indian tribes these days and they objected to her image being used on the coins. The federal administration at that time was more interested in making a pointless feel-good statement with the administration’s constituents and didn’t care about what the tribes wanted. All show and no substance.
It's not if you're including other denominations. The Walking Liberty half dollar and the Standing Liberty quarter make the Sac look like dog meat.
The very existence of the Morgan Dollar is purely political, especially if you factor the input of the silver industry at the time. So, I believe in the formula: BEAUTY IS IN THE EYE OF THE BEHOLDER + TO EACH HIS OWN = ATTRACTIVE DESIGN.
$1 coins Dollar coins suck! I love the old dollars leading up to the Ikes, but since they reduced the size, the SBA's and the SAC's just dont 'live' up to their role in American Coinage. My Vote went to the Ike, i never liked the way the Morgan aged.
The Morgan has been my favorite for 30 years. Ikes are my second favorite, Peace dollars would be third.
Also in the same coin magizine that told the story of the SAC dollar, it was Hillary Clinton that pushed for this design. She basically shot down all of the beautiful liberty designs because she wanted a politically correct dollar coin. The SAC coin is great in size and I like the false-gold color. It also has a great reverse design too. Could they come up with a better obverse than what we have...you betcha. As for the SBA...only a mother could love a mug like hers. You are right...beauty is in the eye of the beholder and ugly women need loving too! Quick, get some makeup...lots of it!
I guess I still don't see how Sacagawea is considered "politically correct"... Liberty was overused, presidents are overused. It's about time for something different.
for me it is a toss up between the silver eagle or the peace dollar. I would like to see the mint do a new design with the origional design for the st gaudiens 20 doller gold piece.
You sound like someone I know... So, if someone told you that the depiction of Liberty on the St. Gauden's $20 gold piece were "ugly", you would dispute that? Even though it's their opinion that she's ugly and their opinion is just as valid as yours? In other words, some people think the St. Gaudens is a beautiful coin, some people think otherwise. Likewise, some people think the SBA or SAC coins are beautiful, some don't. Your opinion is that the SBA is an ugly coin. But, you know what they say about opinions...
