It's never too late, you can always ask for next year. Since this is half thread, I thought I would share a story here. A guy at work approached me a few weeks ago. He said he had heard that I may know a few things about coins. I told him, yes, I know a bit about them. He proceeded to tell me that his son (young teenager) had recently expressed interest in coins. He asked my advice on what he should buy his son for Christmas that was coin related. I suggested a Redbook. Fast forward to this week, I approached this coworker. I handed him a VG10 raw 11-S half and David Lawrence's book on Barber half dollars. I told him his son must report to me the mintage of that particular coin and the location it was minted at, and that he could keep both as a gift. ( I have a few copies of that book ) Hopefully I created a new Barber half collector, but at the very least, hopefully I passed on the hobby to a younger generation. Enjoy your Barbers everyone!
I bought this one at an IRS auction at a storage place. These are the noted I made that day, 20 something years ago. I gave a little less than scrap value. It has a bit of PVC damage. "BOUGHT IN A PLASTIC BAG WITH TWO WORN LIBERTY HALFS. SET IN RAIN ALL DAY, BUT IT PAID OFF. NO ONE KNEW WHAT WAS THERE. ANOTHER FUNNY THING. THE IRS DID NOT CHARGE SALES TAX. THEY WILL SEND A LETTER SOME DAY ASKING FOR IT."
This is the only way to keep me from posting anymore pics. http://www.pcgs.com/setregistry/publishedset.aspx?s=136091
Thanks. It's fun to look back at the notes I made years ago. It's interesting to see how bad my spelling was and how wrong I was on many coins.
