    What is a Xoanon?

"Plank figure" of chalk, Early Cypriot III to Middle Cypriot I, 1900-1800 BCE (Museum of Cycladic Art, Athens).
A xoanon (/ˈzoʊ.ənɒn/ ([IMG] listen),[1] Greek: ξόανον; plural: ξόανα xoana, from the verb ξέειν, xeein, to carve or scrape [wood][2]) was an Archaic wooden cult image of Ancient Greece. Classical Greeks associated such cult objects, whether aniconic or effigy, with the legendary Daedalus. Many such cult images were preserved into historical times, though none are known to have survived to the modern day, except where their image was copied in stone or marble. In the 2nd century CE, Pausanias described numerous xoana in his Description of Greece, notably the image of Hera in her temple at Samos. "The statue of Samian Hera, as Aethilos [sic!] says, was a wooden beam at first, but afterwards, when Prokles was ruler, it was humanized in form".[3] In Pausanias' travels he never mentions seeing a xoanon of a mortal man.

@ F.N. The obverse of your coin from Sicily under William II has an Arabic ligature,I think. It's LA (LamAlef) instead of OV ligate, in the word SCOUS. So it becomes SCLAS instead of SCOUS. Please check it.

If that is the case, what would ‘SCLAS’ mean? As it is, the latin legend would stand for REX W[illelmus] S[e]CO[nd]US, or ‘King William the Second.’ It could be that instead of a ligature it is an abbreviation mark.

I think you're right @ F.N. But what a coincidence. This Arabic ligature (LamAlef) is the only one that I know, and it's considered as an independent and basic letter by itself, as one letter of the Arabic Alphabet which is comprised of 29 letters. It ranks 28th, just before the last letter "Yah" (Y). Thanks for checking this matter. I also suspected it that way because the reverse included Arabic legend. I'm a translator by the way. LOL..
