I've been trying to collect and improve upon what I call the Family Tree. Antoninus Pius, Faustina Sr., Marcus Aurelius, Faustina Jr., Lucilla, Lucius Verus and Commodus. Some are in poor condition, while others, like Faustina Jr., has a pretty good portrait. Sent from my XT1254 using Tapatalk
@fred.lombardo102 Very nice Tree! I believe I have some of them: Antoninus Pius Faustina Sr. Marcus Aurelius and since I really collect Republic coins, I like to compare an Imperial AE Sestertius to a AR Sestertius from the Republic: Faustina Jr. Lucilla On the HIT LIST... Lucius Verus Commodus
nice group fred! this is a weak spot in my collection, no faustina, no commodus, no lucius verus....and i'm low on marcus aurelius coins. i have this ugly but interesting unlisted MA... and i have a a few respectable faustina ii coins...
This sestertius of Marcus Aurelius isn't in great condition, but the reverse does show Victory inscribing a shield with "VIC PAR" to commemorate the victory over the Parthians in the war of 161- 166 AD: And here's a denarius and a sestertius of Lucilla. I think the sestertius portrait is still quite lovely despite the extensive wear on the coin:
Hey! My Lucilla came in! Roman Imperial Lucilla AR denarius Juno seated, flower, child in swaddling clothes Seaby 36
I was doing research on Sabina last week due to a post I saw, was wondering if there would be an opportunity to somehow post something I found. Now I see it is relevant. Check this family tree out on Wikipedia concerning the family connections relating from Titus and Nerva down to Gordian III. It really is fascinating to see the relations through blood and marriage, many of which I was not aware of, but ultimately not surprising considering how the Imperial lines wished to somehow connect any claim to the throne to those before them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vibia_Sabina
Wow Fred, that's a sweet family-tree you've got there ... congrats! Oh, and great additions by the usual coin-gang (you guys rock) Here are a few of my similar family-tree examples ... A-Pius Faustina Sr. Faustina Jr. Lucilla Lucius Verus Commodus Marcus Aurelius
My OTHER Lucilla came in from @John Anthony: Roman Imperial Lucilla, AD 164-182 AR denarius, 18mm, 2.8g, 6h; Rome mint, AD 166-169. Obv.: LVCILLA AVGVSTA; Bare head right, draped. Rev.: PVDICITIA; Pudicitia standing front, head left, veiled and holding hand at breast. Reference: RIC III 780, p. 276
Wonderful posts!!! So as not to be too repetitive at this late response, I'll just throw in a dupondius of Faustina II with that deep chocolate patina:
