Is it me or there's bubbles everywhere? Plus, an obvious sprue. Were these coins ever cast? I think it's supposed to be a coin of Ptolemy II Philadelphos - http://www.wildwinds.com/coins/greece/egypt/ptolemy_II/SNGCop_119.jpg . Thanks!
It's authentic. They're not bubbles - just a bit of a rough surface, not uncommon. The flans were cast, then trimmed on a lathe machine, so sometimes you see sprues if the trimming was done hastily. There is nothing wrong with this coin - in fact, it's a great example of the type.
Cool new addition, fomovore ... hey, what is your coin's weight and diameter? (some of these babies get to be pretty huge!!) ... I'm pretty sure that TIF has one that's close to 100 grams!? I have a couple of Ptolemy IV examples ... they are both fairly huge (41 mm in diameter, weighing-in around 70 grams) => they're AE Philopators (221-204 BC) oh, and I also have a Ptolemy X example (it shows "2" eagles, but is a mere 24 mm in diameter and 8.8 grams)
They made nice small ones too... Ptolemy III Eurgetes, 246-221 BC AE16: 2.77g, 12h; Tyre mint, Club series Obv.: Diademed bust of Zeus Ammon right. Rev.: Eagle standing left on thunderbolt, club in front. Reference: Svoronos 711
Awesome. Good to know! A friend is selling so I'll buy it then. It's a bit uneven - between 27 and 28mm (widest). I don't have a scale yet. It's heavy though and almost 5.1mm thick. Beautiful coins, by the way.
