New thread, how do we know when a new (or old poster) is having us for lunch. What are signs of a con in our forums?

New commers, right off the bat stating they have something very rare or valuble, at first!
The con here is that if they truly knew that would they be new poster or new collector? Of course not all by a long shot with this wording are guilty. But the giveaway here is "how in fact, do they already know for sure" I would not have! Are they just bragging or do they indeed have "another agenda"?

    Changing avitars.
It would never have occurred to me to change my avitar on a post by post basics, week to week or month to month.
Could the con here be to confuse and distort or keep us a little off base?

    Posting then fading away.
Posting like crazy for a short time thousands of post, arguing, debating and then silent, gone for awhile or for good.
The con here is hidden agenda for a single purpose posting. Take statequarterguy, where did he go? Again, many that may do this are not guilty but many I fear are!

Inflamed remarks almost from the first.
This con is common and fairly well noticed right off and thier motive is not at all to learn about coins. Are they mad at the world or things we know nothing about? How on earth do they not see that we see them and if so what will make them happy, surely not us because we don't know what's bothering them in the first place now do we.

Posting only in one single area.
This con is not representitive of a normal cointalker. We comment and surf in many different areas of CoinTalk because we are interested in a vaired amount of subjects.

User ID similar to past users or locations.
Many times I've noticed this and you'all have to. The con here is ideas on subjects a little too close to past posts or that they remind you of other who suddenly left or have been banned.

That's all I'm going to list for now but I would like to hear other's hints about posters with no good intensions or what you have seen as red flags of cons.

Let me guess. A real poster is someone who writes a post. Therefore, a fake poster is someone who doesn't post?

BTW, I like Lehigh's comment also!

Not sure - some people start out enthusiastic and it dies quick with the seriousness that some people take with collecting. Right or wrong - it does chase some away. I have pointed a couple of people to this or other sites - the response back - "Way to serious for me I just like collecting state quarters(or something else)." So really hard to tell at times.

    Fake Poster? What next?

All these are great responses. I still have not figured out the Ladybug one, except that she seems exceptionally bright and strong witted.

Watch out fellow! - the author of this thread may have unleashed a ton of ownry ideas from those coin critters with a few extra minutes on their hands.

Here is an interesting thought: Do any of you ever throw coins to help unleash aggression? Maybe that is just for the youth and fake posters.

This thread offers some interesting consideration,-but more than I am capable of pulling out a hat. :goofer:

    But fake posters?

I'm still open to new ideas if they prove true or useful.

Trolls! Seriously, I post at a number of message boards.... And there are "people" (being polite) who just post for their own enjoyment

    Step 1
Realize that their messages are a waste of time and energy. Letting Internet message board trolls get under a person's skin is an effort in futility. What they post on message boards is not about you. Do not take it personally.
    Step 2
Understand that message board trolls do it for the attention. If they are given that attention, it just fuels their passion to post annoying information. If there is no reward, they will eventually go away or stop posting.
    Step 3
Understand that message board trolls are all about themselves. What they post is about them and not specific related to the topic they are expounding on. The statements a troll makes may be asinine and make your blood boil, but understand it will impossible to change their minds or alter their views. The troll is posting on a topic specifically for the attention and not about that specific topic.
    Step 4
Leave the message for a few days. Often these trolls become bored and leave or get banned from the community after a few days. Putting the keyboard down and just walking away is often the best solution.
    Step 5
Ask the moderator to ban the message board troll. While this is not totally ignoring the troll, it does not give them the satisfaction of a direct response. With enough requests, the user will be banned and the problem will be solved. (Courtesy of http://www.ehow.com/how_2090771_ignore-message-board-trolls.html)

I read several of those "fake posts". They sure looked real to me. I wonder what status that makes me.

If this is true, than I feel pretty stupid now. You try to help somebody and maybe it's someone just stringing us along to get a kick out of it? Makes you not want to help anybody anymore and just stick with the core group.

I feel bad for idiots that would have that much time on their hands. I always try to be skeptical and am naturally somewhat cynical, and the moment you let your guard down, somebody's taking advantage of you. Thanks for the thread.

Ironically, I find that this forum is not near serious enough. It is like a crab cake with no crab meat. I do what I can, but it seems that threads like this will get 50+ replies but real threads about real numismatic topics never reach the second page.

This thread was prompted by another thread about 9 junk silver Mercury Dimes. IMO, discussing nine coins worth less than $10 is a waste of time. Discussing the troll like qualities of members such as the OP of the Nine Coins thread is a monumental waste of time. The problem is that this might be the most interesting thread at the moment, hence my involvement.

Good point. I will unsubscribe to this thread and move on to where I can really learn something.

And sorry if I am not serious enough. Coins have always been a source of pure enjoyment and fun for me. I have taken up the Numismatic topic mainly due to the fact that my pockets have to be so deep to get some of the coins I really desire. Since, the dollar value has risen with my interests, it seemed prudent to be open to learning a little.

I have no interest in becoming a pro, I just want to keep on collecting coins with better discretion.

Not at all and it'a meant to stimulate our constructive posts while helping us all reveal cons. It's that simple.

Look we know there are folks on here trolling and faking plus eating time, mine and yours and this great forum does not deserve that.
When you start to reveal a con and learn ways to spot them quicker you take away their power. Their only device or advantage in this case is deception for a short time, sooner or later they are seen for what they are. Why not share ideas to spot them quicker? There is no effective way to keep them from infiltrating so why not learn form each other the tip-offs before hand if by sharing information about thier methods. The methods we have seen to date. I don't know all their tricks but together we know most of them.
Plus don't you'all think that if a person were going to post fake and deceptive posts on a site and started reading this they may think "hey, this place has my number I should probably move on to the next site, this is to hard"!

If fearing this could possibly serve to educate members who con to begin with, well I don't think so or not much - they aren't that smart to begin with. I mean there is not that big a reward here for such foolesness as that - for a con that would be too much work, they don't work that hard - that's the whole point isn't it?
