I have no problem with 'dumb' questions but I am tired of the insincere ones from people trying to make a quick profit on coins without putting any effort into the study or any money into patronizing real dealers (I am not one, real or otherwise).

Many here have a negative opinion of Forvm (the ancients only discussion venue) but they have one rule that I am starting to like. No discussions of price are allowed. I will have trouble not mentioning it in my posts but no coin has a value until a buyer and a seller can agree on a number. That makes it hard to give the Red Book answers beginners seem to want.

Interesting viewpoints. I also notice @ficus has just responded.

    Welcome @ficus !

Sincere persons, especially those new to the hobby, obviously have initial questions such as "What is it?....Is it real?...What's it worth? ...and What could it buy?

I offer my opinion to such questions when requested and often provide a general range of market values for a coin according to my impression of it from provided photos, just I do for myself when evaluating a coin at auction for purchase. Then it's off to CNG, acsearch and other archives to better grasp current market values compared to what I'm willing to pay. And I often provide a link for those asking the 'value question' and let them decide what a common, rare and/or pricey coin may be worth---at least as a 'ball-park figure since the latter coins usually require a far closer examination. I see nothing wrong with mentioning a coins potential value when requested to do so.

Looking through this thread, I think I now understand the confusion. Maybe :D

Correct me if I'm wrong, @ficus.

Ficus posted the aureus as a "comparison". He is not the owner of that coin. We thought he meant he owns that aureus, which was the source of bafflement because someone who owns a $200,000+ coin would not ask strangers on a coin forum if a very dubious denarius was real or fake.

Or, maybe I was the only one who was confused :D

    Now I'm really confused...

@ficus Are your subsequent posts meant to say that the first silver example is fake, the second real and the third ( a real aureus) provided simply as comparison to the silver denarii? I'd like to know what the purpose of all this actually was....since we all know judging genuineness solely on photos, even excellent ones, is just an opinion and not a certification in any sense of the word.

Certainly I agree with this sentiment but I usually (but not always) have some difficulty discerning sincerity from a first posting or thread. That's why I'm willing to give most posters the benefit of the doubt.

Maybe this site should disallow public discussion of value, but we all understand this natural curiosity about ancient coins' values.

Yes, I surely got the fake/not fake aureus call spectacularly wrong.

You might consider trying to write, rather than post simple pictures, to better elucidate your thoughts and questions. If English isn't your native language, try writing anyway with the help of Google Translate. This site is very tolerant of non-English speakers (since most of us are monolingual English speakers ourselves).

Has everyone forgotten that there are counterfeiters out there that might be seeking advice to improve their products. Red flags all over this one IMO.

 IMHO, there is nothing in this thread that is EVEN REMOTELY helpful to a counterfeiter!

:hilarious::hilarious::hilarious::hilarious: Look's bad; I don't like it; what's it weigh; genuine ancients are not round; etc...:D:p

These coins all appear to be genuine.

The coin you originally posted is very, very, unlikely to be genuine.

Since you continue to be skeptical of the opinions given on this site, it's pretty much useless to continue this thread. These opinions won't change, and the pictures you posted above only help to confirm that your coin is a counterfeit, not disprove it.

You should engage the services of an expert to evaluate this coin if you really want an authoritative answer.
