Just got a note in my inbox from a member who's involved in the Fairfax Coin Club. Anyone else in that area? http://www.fairfaxcoinclub.com/
I'm sort of close (Silver Spring, MD). And I used to go to the shows they had down that way. -- Vienna, VA - 4 times a year (which incidentally is getting restarted after a year or two break) -- Annandale, VA at NOVA CC - twice a year.
Annandale is a very good mid-size show (80-90 tables). A nice range of dealers from inexpensive to pricey. One of the top small cent dealers in the country sets up there and another dealer that has a broad range of US items. And plenty of room to move around. The only thing better in the DC/Baltimore area that I know of are the Baltimore Whitman shows three times a year. Late March is the next one. The Vienna show was in the 40-50 table range but since it just restarted I think there was a big falloff in dealers. And it tends to be quite cramped.
Awesome, I'm really excited. Hoping to find a nice Double eagle pre-1900. I haven't been to a coon show in almost a decade.
I live in Maryland so when I go to NOVA they think they're being invaded by the North. But the fact is that Maryland was originally "created" as a southern state.
NOVA isn’t the south. You gotta go 30 minutes south to around Fredericksburg before VA really is the south. NOVA is really just suburban DC
Years ago (about 1960) when I was starting out at UMd I was taking G&P (required course otherwise I wouldn't have taken it). It was one of those mass courses where there was 100+ students. The professor asked how many southerners there was in the class. Maybe 10% raised their hand. Then he stated that if we were 50 miles south and asked the same question about 90% would have raised their hand. At the time that was the difference between Maryland and Virginia.
Well I am originally from Minnesota. May as well be from Mars for all the similarities when I move, haha.
Border state only in Text books...the fact of the matter was Maryland was a Southern state...... the first shots of the Civil war were at Fort Sumter SC. However... The first casualties were on Pratt st in South Baltimore. Federal Hill was just that a Federal installation maned by Northern Federal troops from NY and Mass. And the saying of division of brother fighting brother,as well cousin fighting cousin is true as yes the state was divided with its citizens split between each cause. Lincoln was stopped from passing through Baltimore by rail due to concerns of an attempt on his life .
