At my Local Coin Club last night and a fellow member, a high-end US Type Set collector, pulled out this beauty. It's a CACG MS-66+ and just simply about as flawless as a coin of this vintage can be. Coin in hand is even better than the photos. Side note: It's the LM-3 die marriage.
How, just HOW, did that coin get ONLY a MS-66+? I am no expert at grading half dimes at all, but I know when I see a MS-66+ vs a 67 or better. That would easily grade a 67 at any other service. Did the guy say how much he paid for something like this?
The coin was previously in a PCGS holder graded MS-66+. I saw it in that holder earlier this year. So it crossed at the same grade. No, I did not ask how much it cost. That's just gauche. It's all about the coin. Of course, except when it isn't.
Do you guys buy and sell to each other? I've often thought about joining my local coin club but it's in a damned inconvenient (and not great) part of town and in the winter I don't cotton to driving in the dark while rush hour traffic is still going on. It's a cheap membership so maybe I'll just do summer months.
Yes, on occasion. Personal transactions. The club also has an auction at each meeting. We also have members who are either part-time or full-time dealers and they set up at the back of the room with their wares. Clubs range from awful to fabulous. And even good ones might not meet your particular needs and desires. It's all about the people with clubs.
I'd actually love to join one. I just don't like the times and location. I wish it was closer to home. The last time I went to a coin show, I realized I'm a bigger nerd than I imagined myself after summing up the participants. It was illuminating, and disgusting at the same time.
