Had to put it in the right thread, I'm no expert at threads! Anyone can call themselfs and expert. Is that what bothers dude? The proof is "in the pudding". Again, have you looked at hundreds of thousands of coins? Can you search 5000 Lincoln cents in an afternoon and each time you pick one up know exactly what to look for in your sleep. Do you know what decade the cent is by looking at the reverse before you turn it over? 1997? Look for doubled ear obv., wavy steps rev., yellow/brass planchets, strike quality, die state, die rotation and do that in one second. Plus be able to do it on every coin since 1959 and most since 1909? Have you memorized every known doubled die in the series and the die markers for each??? Can you pick up the phone and call Potter (I just did, talked for an hour), Bordner, Crawford, Weinburg? Is your name referenced in die variety books? Did you help write some? Is your coins photos in those books? Have you found one of the rairest coins in the world as far as U.S. variety are concered? Did you get in Coin World for that? Not once but three times for different coins??? Do you have dozens of people come to your monthly longest running coin show in the nation to ask your opinion of a coins? Do you know that you are certain you have much always to learn but in fact, yes, you do know a great deal? Well golly gee golly I have no problem in the world saying yes, in many respects when it come to Lincoln cent die varieties, I am an expert. There are many that know much more than I but I do know much. Balls of fire dude you think I qualify yet??? Also, (and I'll shut up after this) Knowing ones abillties is as much a part of true humility as knowing what one does not know - they are both equally important. I will not as false pride would have some say, "well I won't say I'm an expert, it's kind of bragging. I have earned and paid dues to say what I say and know what I know. I will not let anyone take that away from me, I paid dearly for this!
LOL , I don't even know you, but damn it, I like you. You are an EXPERT. There I said it. By the way, I liked your introduction to LCR.. Lincoln Cent Specialist. Have fun...
I am still wondering what half that stuff you talked about is let alone how to find it. I can't 70S small date from large date, or seperate the 82's into the proper catagory. I don't care who calls themself an expert I have been on this site for a few months now and I can assure there are a ton of experts on here. I learn something everyday so now I am getting closer to being an expert at reading post that are accurte and informative. What differance does it make if a person claims to be an expert or not. Unless you are paying them the information is free so use what you need and learn from the mistakes of others you want live long enough to make all of them yourself. Kent
The 70-S smdt is pretty easy just look The 70-S smdt is pretty easy just look for the last part of "Liberty" washed out and very weak also the "0" in 70 on the lgdt. has a little bulb on top of it - easy to see if you turn the coin as if you are looking south to north and the high place on the "0" will be easy to see. If you are looking thru. circ. stuff or tubed BU rolls, even mint sets you will rairly ever come across it, does not hurt to look but I have never found one so don't expect to much. The 82's are another matter, I can tell them all but I have looked at 10,000's of them. Large and small date are easy, very noticable but the composition change for zinc is that the zinc ones will weigh less, just a tad but enough for any gram scale to tell you. They also sound different when dropped on a hard surface. The easiest way (and I got this from here) is make a mini scale using a round rod and a popcycle stick, get a known copper and then on the other end put you cent in question. I just if unknown put them on the scale, on mine the copper will show 3 grams the zinc 2.5. Hope this helps,
Thanks BHP that is why I asked the experts. This is a post like I mentioned before I love the Lincolns, but even if you don't there is something to be learned by all. IMHO this is a Clinker nomination (do we have spell check). I guess I need a site for grammer and spelling so i can ask the experts there LOL
