This is an incredible thread. I'm fairly new to Morgan collecting, and this is extremely informative to me. Thank you!
i also have some morgan dollars in my collection, though not very many. still, thank you very much for posting this and good job!
Great thread Raider! I've collected Morgans for years, read most of the books you recommend, and I still learned a lot from reading your thread. You exemplify what coin talke is all about: educating the readers. Thanks.
Excellent information. I recently did a live presentation about Morgan Dollars at the coin club that meets in El Segundo, CA. I touched upon many of the same points during my 25 minute presentation. I brought along Morgans from most of the major hoards, as well as examples of Proof-Like Deep-Mirror-Proof-Like, and various toners. Those curious about the club, can search for Bay Cities Coin or the old name Culver City Coin club.
Reviving this excellent thread. I added a top value vote to the tally, and it inspired me to buy the Bower's book. Did Raider ever write a grading thread, per the above? ETA, found it! http://www.cointalk.com/t115123/
I bookmarked this thread a short while ago when it resurfaced, and just now finished reading it for the umpteenth time. Thank you for posting such a concise and informative history. I appreciate all the time you spent researching and writing. It is a trove of information for those of us new to the field and we learned a lot. Best regards and thank you again! -L
I really enjoyed this, would like to see one on the peace dollar and mercury dimes as well. *hint hint*
Great post! Just wanted to add - do you know the reason that the British faced a silver run in India in 1918? During WWI, Germany spent a lot of propaganda effort on undermining trust in British currency. They started a rumor that British banks were unable to pay out silver for specie, which came awfully close to becoming a self-fulfilling prophecy.
Going through some of my old subscribed threads and found this. Just as good now as it was a couple of years ago. Just thought I'd give it a bump!
