I have an offer to locally trade 6 rolls (120) of my 40% silver halves for 215 90% silver mercury dimes. I can't decide what to do... the way I see it there are a few pros and cons... Do you guys think it's a good or bad deal? Right now melt for the halves is $604.80, and for the dimes it is $530.05 Pros: 90% pure silver has a slightly higher premium, and a higher demand. Mercury dimes have an even higher premium than most 90% coins. I'm not very fond of 40% kennedy halves, and I think mercury dimes are visually pleasing. I won't have to risk shipping an expensive package with valuables. Cons: I will lose about 12.5% of my actual silver weight. My silver stacks won't look as massive (hehe) What do you guys think?! Would you take the offer?
If your partial to the dimes, you could perhaps make the trade and ask the gentleman for $75 to equal out the difference. Or even $50 so that he still feels like he's getting what he wants and your getting what you want. I am into collecting PM coins so I wouldn't make the trade because I would be losing silver.
Silver is silver... it all sells, especially in smaller amounts. Chances are this guy is making the offer for his own profit, so you could always even out the deal some and see what happens, but I think you already know.
Despite the fact that it's sometimes hard to get full melt value for 40% halves, I think you're getting the short end of the stick in this deal. If you were offering 110-115 for 215 dimes, or getting 230-235 dimes for your 120 halves, then I'd say it was a fair deal, despite there still being a little discount on the halves.
Thanks guys. I'll probably just keep my halves, and buy some mercs from a coin shop on the next dip. I don't really care for the owner of the shop but he lets me pick out whatever I want for melt.
Ah, I didn't realize this was a dealer you were talking about. I don't begrudge dealers for making a small profit when buying/selling/trading, and 12.5% isn't too bad. If you found a collector that was willing to trade 90% for your 40%, you'd probably be able to get a better deal. The hard part is finding that person...
The offer actually was with a private individual, the coin shop only offers about 75-80% of melt for 40% halves! But he sells 90% coins for exactly melt so I just buy from him and never sell any
