Excessive toning on a modern proof...

This is a proof coin from 1990 that has toned in the OGP. Was thinking of submitting it, but was also considering giving it a quick bath in MS70 first. Thoughts on this one? If this was a coin that was quite a bit older I'd leave it alone, but it looks kind of odd on a coin this new?

So, (a) would you consider this to be "ugly" toning, and
    (b) should/would you make it "blast white!" again?

    Thanks for any input...

I would say it's pretty neutral in terms of eye appeal. I would not dip it.

That is ugly toning and I would clean it. No rubbing of any sort, but dip, rinsing, whatever else you could. If silver, EZest is good stuff, but be careful.

if you dip it they might not slab it after it's been cleaned/dipped. is this a expensive coin ? $40.00 not really. is it worth the slabbing fees ? your choice. mintage-5,457 that's low, .850 silver, weight- 28.80g or 0.787 oz. size-37mm

I'm not familiar with these coins, so I'm not sure why you would want to submit it for grading. However, if that is your desire, you might consider submitting it to NCS for examination, conservation and submission to NGC for grading rather than risk damaging the coin with an improper cleaning.

5% of FMV or $25, whichever is higher. In this case, you'd be spending more than it costs to buy another coin on eBay just to have it certified and conserved.

Thanks for the replies so far. It's part of a 3-coin set, one of which IS expensive (relatively speaking) so I wanted to do the set. I have the PCGS voucher I need to use anyway, so these three would make the 8 that I need. The others strangely enough are Third Reich coins, go figure.

If I don't dip it, I won't be able to see any milk spots that I'm sure will appear.

    Looking forward to more replies.

I'm with Paul on the neutral-ness of the toning.
I wouldn't dip it either. No need.

What would a little bath in ammonia do to it?

Dilute the dip at LEAST 50% with distilled water ONLY and have a prepared bowl of BOILING distilled water for the rinse,in-out-no more than 3-5 sec. total time pat dry only.

I would really not be comfortable with that.

I wouldn't clean anything more valuable than Grandma's silver in ammonia.

If you dip something correctly no one can tell it has been done.

PS it had to have been the right candidate to begin with.

I wouldn't dip it if I was gonna send it in to be graded as you may be shooting yourself in the foot with that idea, meaning they may not grade it. The toning is not attractive at all but it looks natural and that's how natural works. Sometimes you get a beauty and sometimes you don't. My take is below.

    1. If you're sending it in for a grade, don't dip.

    2. If you're simply gonna sell it, dip it.

    3. If you're gonna keep it, your choice.

Will it? A lot depends on what you do with it after you dip it. I dipped a proof Special Olympics dollar I ordered without seeing a spot, and then made sure to rinse THOROUGHLY all the dip, and then rinse in distilled water and it still looks good. All silver might tone over extended time.
