Firmso's idea might work, but I think (can't say for sure) that the tape on that coin is pretty dried up. That might work with some tape that hadn't got hard, though?
Place in hot water to remove most of the large pieces of tape as I don't think the adhesive will complete come off. Then try EVOO. And complete the process by an acetone soak. -LTB
Triage I'm just following the rules: 1) http://www.cointalk.com/t5068/ 2) What is it and who cares? 3) What can be done about it? 4) HOW can this be done? 5) WHEN should this be done? 6) Who should be the next caretaker? ****************************************************** One~is established Two~It seems to be a 1916 S LWC (RAW~Not graded and poorly "slabbed") 2) a. let it be? Crack it out. Has been cracked out. b. do something to it? B.1 What?
Any Votes for EVOO? Any Votes for EVOO? If this makes it worse I think the hot water may remove the oil attempt, right?
Gorilla tape I like that idea. I'll try that on the Obv. Here is the "Before" Gorilla tape image. The Red Book indicates this may be a VG-8, perhaps better if your idea pans out. Thank you.
After Firmso~I found your idea worth trying. And after doing it to the REV did the same to the OBV. Valhalla! Much better. So far the coin is undipped, but .....now what?
Now try the Acetone bath; although I think you're about at the end of all that can be done for this coin. -LTB
i second this as acetone does not damage copper as it does silver. so i have been told hya: but at this stage what have you to lose. just my two and six dave
Shoot....I was going to suggest giving it to the dog. Nobody here has tried dog saliva yet. Could be an amazing discovery......:smile
After the dip This is after the acetone dip. It's getting worse, I think. Time for the week in EVOO? Ideas?
Current list Well~Into a jelly jar of EVOO has begun. Figure I can roll it around a bit to disperse everything. What is the gravel for? And 120 grid sounded like too much for sand blasting. Maybe 400. gravel is to get the stuff on the surface of the coin and to clean it up persay, and i think putting it in a tumbler will get that dark stuff off
Modification I may consider your idea but what if I modify it by using walnut shells (like I use for my reloading brass)? Meanwhile I have it taking a EVOO bath. Anybody? Other ideas? It has "changed" since losing the tape. Whether or not for the better is still a work in progress.
