They "claimed" it changed in the holder - publicly - but it didn't change at all. Those who physically saw the coin, before and after - were well aware that it never changed. And it was talked about a LOT ! I even wrote an article about it at the time, complete with the Heritage links for the first auction which was immediately after it was slabbed, and the second auction where PCGS stopped the auction after it had reached almost double what it previously sold for, and then bought it back for less than half what the current high bid was. And in both sets of pictures on Heritage - there is no change in the coin. At the time, I even tried to interview David Hall about it - he refused to allow the interview.
It is also part of the reason (although the milkspotting silver eagles were a bigger reason) why they added the "if it goes bad in the holder after slabbing" exception to the guarantee. It wasn't always in there.
I have an 1879-CC Morgan PCGS graded MS63. I bought it in its PCGS Slab. Sent it in for regrade, really just wanted a new slab but thought what the heck its guaranteed not to downgrade. Just got notice that it was not holdered. Argh. Waiting to see whats next
Hope they meant that the grade did not change rather than the coin really wasn’t holdered. In the latter case, they either think it’s fake or too damaged to receive a number grade. Good news is they should pay you current market price for the coin. I noticed they changed their policy since my original posts in 2016. Coin is now guaranteed not to go down in grade on a regrade (assuming it’s gradable). Guess they want to increase their regrade submissions. Cal
